#3 Paragraphs

In the novel, signal fires are used to help give a feeling of survival. Without a fire, there would be no symbol of hope or rescue for the boys to rely on. Ralph also tell of this in a quote, “So we can’t have a signal fire... We’re beaten” (125). Ralph seems to be very unhappy with the fact that the beast has defeated they boys, leaving them without a fire.
As shown in the book, Jack’s fire can either be used as a positive or negative affect for the boys. This is because fire can be either good or bad. The main reason for the fire is to attract others to come save them on the island. Piggy's glasses were used to start fires because nothing else could be found. One group of boys, late at night, secretly took the burning branches from the beach fire to help their fire from not going out (232). Fire is always easier to keep going when you don't have to make it yourself.
In the novel, fire can be a signal of hope. For example, when they lit the fire to flush Ralph out of the woods. The significance of the fire makes you believe somthing good will happen. When the naval officer talked about the smoke from the fire its what they wanted to be saved from the whole time.
